*(8)Padstow Farm Shop, 01841 533 060 At Trethillick Farm just up the road, going to Crugmeer. New for 2006
a modern farm shop offering Cornish produce of the best quality; not only their own farm grown vegetables, but their own beef and lamb with other meat form Cornish producers, with dairy products, bread, eggs, ice cream and gifts. Very convenient.

*Opposite (6) Ripley’s – St Merryn (01841) 521 407.
New in 2006, Paul Ripley is a Michelin Star awarded chef (see eating out) has created the best of delicatessens, I think, in Cornwall! Very good puds, chocs and bread, salads, salamis and pots of every preserve you can think of. Will create a menu for dinner parties at home.

16 *The Seafood Delicatessen (01841) 533 868.
Rick Stein’s new Delicatessen and Take away on the South Quay, Old Fish Market – in the big car park as you drive down into Padstow. This is a very busy and popular deli: it has ‘Food Hero’s’ products, wet fish counter and some wonderful ready made meals. There are Stein’s own chutneys, jams and savouries. If you need something strange like shallots or cardamom pods, you can normally find it here. A bit expensive but very good.

16ish Padstow Fisheries – South Quay, next to Rig Marine. (Not open in the winter). This is good fish monger
and very much cheaper than Rick Stein’s Deli, however, does not have a huge range of fish.

11 Rick Stein’s Patisserie, Landawell Road, Padstow. As you can imagine; very good bread and pastries,
pasties and other ‘goodies’.

 (2)*Constantine Bay Stores01841 520 573 Constantine Bay.
Pre-order anything from Paté de Froi Gras to potatoes (and say it is for Avon Cottage in Treator), ask about delivery. This is a very good delicatessen and local produce/food shop.
If you want something special, this shop usually sells it!

Tesco Supermarket, Padstow.
Turn left at the ‘T’ junction at the road out of Padstow to Wadebridge. You will see Tescos on your right.
(OR go straight on to Padstow at the cross roads, you will end up at Tescos now on your left).
For the essentials that you need in quantity:- loo paper, cheap beer etc. They are, however, a poor supporter of local products and I am not keen on shopping there. If, however, you are getting supermarket withdrawal symptoms, this is the nearest one! Try to buy Cornish products if you MUST buy food there.
I would strongly advise youagainst buying meat there.

 (4)*Prynns (01841) 520 967;
St Merryn, restaurant that has a small fish shop attached.
This is very good if you do not want to struggle into Padstow (open only in high season).

Near 12*Chough Bakery, The Strand, Padstow. For bread, good prize-winning pasties, very good flapjacks,
scones etc. Also, a dispenser of wonderful ice cream in Summer.
* = Mention you are staying at Hugo & Pippa’s house at Woodlands Country House, – you may get a little more attention!

9+Rig Marine, South Quay & North Quay, Padstow. (01841)532657
The best place to kit out your boat, waterproof yourself and buy fishing tackle and bait. There is a huge range of Marine clothing and equipment, both designer and practical. South Quay is the larger shop but, North Quay has a better assortment of cloths. There is also Chatham Cloths in 4 Duke Street. +Disabled access.

10*+ ‘W’, 2-4 Landawell Road, in the centre of Padstow.
A wonderful shop for objects d’arts. Just walk around and admire all the wonderful and interesting furniture, ornaments and decorations.

19*Bin Two, South Quay Padstow. (01841) 532 022.
Tucked away in the courtyard, a place to buy your smart wines, spirits and port. Go for a taste. A great place for a bit of impulse booze buying. If your order is worthwhile, David will deliver to the cottage. Very good value.

14*Number One, kitchen equipment shop. (01841) 532 833.
In the centre of Padstow, nearly opposite ‘W’. For all kitchen equipment and some linen, including;
Aga stuff and everything you could possibly want in a kitchen (except they don’t sell kitchen sinks!).

12*Gwyneth’s, Market Strand, Padstow. (01841) 532787.
A great place for accessories, jewellery, bags and emergency presents for ‘Her’ – of all ages and very good prices. No ‘Tat’! just some good ideas.

3 Steins, Middle Street, Padstow. (01841) 532 221.
What once was the delicatessen in the ‘Stein empire’, Jill Stein, who is behind all the décor in the restaurants
and hotels, has opened this shop selling very tasteful soft furnishings, paintings and pottery.

15*Beyond The Sea, Middle Street, Padstow.
A small and intimate gallery/craft shop that sells contemporary art and local craft items of the highest quality.
Wonderful place for presents for the folks back home.

+*Padstow Mussel Company, Market Street, Padstow.
Artwork and other things – all made and crafted exclusively in Cornwall and with a seaside theme.
Very good for presents to take home after your holiday. www.thepadstowmusselco.co.uk

(1)Constantine Bay Surf Stores, Constantine Bay. (01841) 520 250.
They hire top quality boards and accessories and also sell designer cloths and ‘nick-knacks; so watch your cards with teenagers around. You will also get surfing advice, which bays have the best surf and tide information – which I am told is important to surfers.

St. Eval Candle Co. St. Eval. (01841) 540850.  Fine quality hand made English candles. Have a look at the factory and buy wonderful gifts for Christmas presents or for any other occasion, for that matter.
Best ever dinner-party candles. The factory is in a very pretty part of our bit of Cornwall www.stevaltrading.com

Padstow, Trevone and St Merryn offer countless other shops and art galleries that specialize in local arts and crafts, and shops to equip surfers, sailors and shoe shops. The main places to window-shop in Padstow are Middle Street, Duke Street, The Strand, North Quay and the Centre of Padstow. There is a very good chemist, Barclays, Lloyds and HSBC banks. Also a Post Office and large newsagents. Anything more you will get in Wadebridge (20 minutes away) or Truro, Cornwall’s capital (45 minutes away). Newquay is about 35 minutes away but is not the nicest place! A great place, however, for the youth with nightclubs etc.

Take Away and Cooked Meals

Numbers in Green denotes position on the Coastal Walks, Shops and Restaurants Guide.

For those who want a day or two of not self catering, here are a few people that will cook for you whilst
you put your feet up! All orders should be with as much notice as possible.

Near 9 Pizzas at Rojano’s – 9 Mill Square off The North Quay, Padstow 01841 532 796
Delivered pizza or pasta to Avon Cottage - put the oven on before it arrives!

16 The Seafood Delicatessen 01841 533 868.
Rick Stein’s Delicatessen and Take away on the South Quay, Old Fish Market – in the big car park as you drive down
into Padstow. You can order various dishes, pâtés and puddings – it will be expensive but very good.
17 Steins New Fish and Chips – Next to the deli – see above. Outstanding but long queues! Grilled as well as fried fish of every type. If you fancy ½ dozen oysters for a picnic this is the place to ‘shuck’ them for you.

 (4) Prynn’s – next to the Post Office, St Merryn 01841 520 976
A good family restaurant, plain cooking with a separate takeaway bit. Very good fish dishes and very reasonable.

The Journeyman Restaurant – Mellingey Mill, St Issey (01841) 540 604
Wonderful authentic Thai, Chinese & Indian menu – were East meets the South West! Outside catering and Freezer orders available. Talk to Christine or Steve. www.journeyman-restaurant.co.uk

Seven Star Palace - St Merryn Holiday Village (01841) 521 531.
Very Good Chinese take-away and restaurant, delivered to the house (for orders over £28.00).
You will have to get them to deliver to the Front Door (as opposed to the garden/back door, usually used) as they do not seem to understand much English. We have never been disappointed with the food and very good value. There should be a menu on the peg-board in the kitchen.

Price of India - St Merryn Holiday Village (01841 521 884 / 521 232)
Our local Indian Take-away and restaurant. Normal Indian fayre – nothing outstanding except it is well cooked and doesn’t seem to be full of preservatives like most Indian food in this country. It is just below the Seven Star Palace but (as far as I know) dose not deliver.

(3)*+Seven Bays Bistro, St Merryn; opposite Ripley’s 01841  521 560
Good take-away dishes – curry & Thai dishes.  Winter months only (October, up to Easter).
 Opposite (3) The Toucan Choo _ St Merryn (01841) 521 211
Chinese Take Away only – Not very Cornish but will give the cook a break. (Always seems to be open. Does not take any credit cards).

Eating Out

Eating Out from Woodlands Country House:

Ref. Look at Padstow Map. (Numbers in brackets you will see in the main Walking Map).

1.* +The Seafood Restaurant – Riverside, Padstow (01841) 532 700.
Very famous restaurant owned by Rick Stein. It is superb for fish and very expensive. In the summer you will have to book in February to be sure of a table!  In the winter, it is easier and worth every penny.  Everything about the food is fantastic, the fish is at its freshest – the menu for the day is only decided when the catch comes in that morning. The service and the quality of wines is what you would expect at one of the country’s finest restaurants.  The restaurant is deceptively large, very bright and airy with walls strewn with modern art.  The whole place was re-vamped in January 2008 and looks magnificent. There is a ‘Drop-in’ bar (that is not bookable) you should try. Not sure how it works yet but will keep you informed.
www.rickstein.com  Highly recommended.

You can now hire the ‘Seafood School’ for parties and events; it can be expensive but beautifully done – call the Seafood Number (01841 533 700) for details.

2.*+Rick Stein’s Bistro – in St Petroc Hotel, 4 New Street, 01841 532700
The Bistro has recently been extended and is very busy. It has a small, well presented menu with a fish accent but not as much as the Seafood restaurant. It is informal and has wonderful ‘chatty’ staff. This Summer, in the and the garden from 4pm to 7pm, Tapas, Mezze & Antipasti are being served, inspired by Rick’s Mediterranean Escapes. No reservation required – just turn up. Very good value. Recommended

3. Rick Stein’s Café – 10 Middle Street, Padstow, 01841 532700
Good, quick food at very good value. The Café has recently improved in quality and has an intimate feel about it. There is a nice little courtyard garden to sit in the Summer. Asian menu on Winter Thursday nights – lovely!
Recommended.

4.*+Margots Bistro– 11 Duke Street, Padstow. 01841 533 441
A charming little Bistro that serves a well cooked menu, innovative dishes at a very reasonable price.  I have had a meal, just as fine as I would get at the Seafood Restaurant, for a fifth of the price! It is run by the chef Adrian Oliver and his wife Julie and together they have created a friendly ambience in a cosy 22 seater restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner, but phone to check out of the summer season. You should book well in advance as Margots is a very small restaurant. Closed Sunday & Monday  www.margots.co.uk Highly Recommended

~ You need to book ASAP for the above restaurants they are very popular!  ~

Mary B’s Cafe
Tucked away in Lanadwell Street (beside Rick’s Patisserie) Padstow this excellent Cafe which serves lunch and cream teas.  All home made dishes and very good value.                   Recommended

19.*+outside only Bin 2, South Quay, Padstow Harbour. 01841 532 022
Not a restaurant, but a charming little wine-bar with just nibbles and lots of wonderful wines and a few Continental bottled beers to try, mostly ‘al-fresco’. Very good place to have a drink on a sunny evening before going on to eat at  one of the many restaurants in Padstow. Sit and look at the Harbour; chat to owner, David about wine - a subject he will enjoy talking about until the boats come in!         Recommended

13. *No. 6 Restaurant , Middle Street, Padstow, (01841) 532 093;
Opened December 2005, this restaurant is superb. The menu is very well set out, easy to read and well presented. The service is very attentive and food individually and artistically served on hand-blown, glass plates and bowls. The flavours are well crafted. Prepare to be there all evening – the service of the food is a ‘theatrical performance’. We have had sophisticated gastronomes, staying with us, that tell us they’ve never had such wonderful food! This is a restaurant that is plainly after – and will get - the top dining awards. www.number6inpadstow.co.uk                                                             Highly Recommended

The Basement Café, South Quay, Padstow, (01841) 532 846.
A nice little café/bistro with well cooked food – nothing too adventurous and very good value. On hot and balmy days and nights, you can sit outside looking at the harbour, under huge umbrellas.        Worth a Try.

Custard, An English Diner - 1A The Strand, Padstow, 08701 700 740 Opened July 2007. This is a new addition to Padstow in the centre of town up a flight of stairs. Serving; English-style breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea and dinner from 8.30am to 10.00pm! We had a very good English supper there at good value. The English traditional dishes have a new slant. www.custarddiner.com    Closed on Tuesdays, winter opening to be decided.                                                                                                                         Recommended

Out of Padstow
(2)*Ripley’s Restaurant, St Merryn. 01841 520 179
Chef Paul Ripley was head chef at Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, and he and his partner started up this very exciting restaurant in 2001. The menu is not ‘fine dining’ yet its sophisticated and fantastic value. The service is good and slow - only because your meal is cooked meticulously, to order; even the bread is baked freshly when you are at your table! The restaurant is comfortable, informal and well decorated. You should book well in advance as it has become terribly popular – not surprisingly! The restaurant has changed its image slightly, this year  - it has more of a ‘Bistro’ atmosphere. Ripley’s is one of two restaurants in Cornwall that has a Michelin Star! Closed Sunday.                                                                              Highly recommended

(3)*+Seven Bays Bistro, St Merryn; opposite Ripley’s 01841  521 560

A classic Bistro with stylish bistro food on a small, well thought out menu. This is an up-and-coming eatery, getting wonderful reviews from local and national press. You can also get a take-away meal in the winter, phone for details. Closed Tuesday & Wednesday out of season.                                                         Recommended
You need to book ASAP for the above restaurants they are very popular!
(4)*Prynn’s – next to the Post Office, St Merryn 01841 520 976
A restaurant for families to go to.  It has a good selection of wholesome, home-cooked fish dishes.  There is also a take-away menu.  They have home-made pizzas and local speciality dishes and an afternoon cream tea to die for!  Check opening times in the winter – usually open Thursday to Saturday evenings. OK.

(5)*+The Ivy House, St Merryn Church. 01841 520 623.
Plain and simple with well known bistro dishes. Excellent for a family supper at very good prices
Set in a delightful old Cornish farm house. Check for winter opening times.                                     OK.

The Journeyman, Mellingey Mill, St Issey, 01841 540 604
On the right on the road to Wadebridge. Where the Far East meets the Southwest! Very good Thai, Indian and British dishes – the Eastern menu has to be tried, though.                                        Recommended.

The Raj, 1 Commissioners Quay, Wadebridge, 01208 895 454/453
A very good Indian restaurant – good for takeaway and wonderful for eating in. It gets very busy as it is the only decent Indian in the area!                                                                                        Recommended

(7)+St Enedoc Hotel 01208 863 394  in Rock, they are very good for lunch ‘Al Fresco’ in the summer with wonderful views.                                                                                                                    Recommended.
(6)+L’Estuaire (formally The Black Pig) 01208 862 622 also in Rock. A bit of France in Cornwall with a French chef, doing what French chefs do best. May be a little fussy for some tastes! Recommended.
Rock is a bit of a pain to get  to; 40 minutes by car or over on the Padstow ferry and a walk.

Nathan Outlaw Restaurant at The Marina Villa Hotel, Fowey 01726 833 315
It took us an hour to get there but it is worth the trip. Nathan has gained a Michelin Star and is well on the way to another. Nathan has set up his restaurant in this lovely ‘Boutique’ hotel and is wowing everybody that eats there. It is not very expensive, the service is exemplary and the atmosphere romantic – you will get a lot of ‘Brownie Points’ taking your loved-one here.                                                                                                             Highly Recommended.
Pubs to Try:

There no good pubs in our area, unfortunately. Bookings are generally not taken (unless I give a telephone number) and food varies in quality in the winter months! These are the better places to go:
+The Shipwrights: North Quay, Padstow. Good view of Padstow Harbour.         OK
+The Pickwick: St Isseygood for views & kids.                                               Recommended.
The Ring O’ Bells; St Issay – a nice Cornish pub food.                                       Worth a try.
+The Cornish Arms: St Merryn Church. Sit outside, good pub food.       .           Worth a try.
+The Quarryman, Wadebridge, Good steaks! 01208 816 444                            Recommended.

Hugo’s Rating: Graded from Average to Outstanding:

Key:                    OK - Worth a try Recommended Highly Recommended.

*    = Mention you are staying at Pippa and Hugo’s Guesthouse – you may get a little more attention!
+ = these restaurants are quite good for wheelchair access – none are brilliant!
Map ref numbers you will see on the ‘Coastal Walks, Shops & Restaurants Guide’.
