    Style and Character

    8 / 10

The house was built in 1884 by Cornish architect Sylvanus Trevail as a ‘Gentleman’s Residence’ for Captain William Martin. It was turned into a hospital for the Fleet Air Arm during Second World War, and has been a hotel since the 1970s. The design is modern-Victorian, thoughtfully renovated with many original features. Owners Hugo and Pippa Wooley have created a home-from-home reminiscent of a grand family house, with personal touches and a dash of splendour where guests are treated like family friends rather than paying strangers. Large rooms with high ceilings are painted in bold Victorian colours with antique furnishings and original Victorian tiles in the reception hall.

    Service and Facilities

    8 / 10

Woodlands is designed for guests to relax: luxuriate in the comfort of The Blue Room or the drawing room, home to an honesty bar alongside a selection of newspapers, or enjoy the tranquil garden and croquet lawn boasting stunning views out towards open fields. Dogs are welcome at Woodlands, as they are also at nearby beaches. Service is tip-top and informative with long-standing, local staff happy to offer advice on trips for your day ahead.

    Rooms

    7 / 10

There are seven double rooms and one small double or single room, sleeping up to 16 guests in total. Each of the eight bedrooms differ slightly in style, with the four rooms in the new part of the house decorated with more modern elements. Décor is on the whole light and bright with antique furnishings and large windows overlooking the manicured lawns. Large bathrooms have Gilchrist and Soames toiletries.

    Food and Drink

    9 / 10

Breakfast at Woodlands is a widely acclaimed lavish affair, served in the canary yellow dining room. Hugo – chef and restaurateur by training and profession – creates wholesome treats with a little of the unexpected. Enjoy the likes of eggs Mimosa (salmon caviar on creamy scrambled egg served on a croustade disc of toast with streaky bacon), Hugo’s homemade granola and muesli (stocked at Fortnum & Mason), banana bread and marmalade slices. Make your own orange juice and help yourself to homemade lemon curd, yogurt, berries and toast.

    Value for Money

    8 / 10

Double rooms are from £104 in low season; and from £124 in high season, including breakfast. Free Wi-Fi.
